The "Antique Candles" artwork takes its inspiration from Johann Daniel Mylius illustrations Anatomia Auri, sive Tyrocinium medico-chymicum (1628).
Each candle represents the sun (gold) and the moon (silver), the two most precious metals in alchemy which could be obtained by the transmutation of base metals through the philosopher's stone.
This practice, called the "Great Work" was one of the main objectives of alchemy, even though it was not aimed for the vain pursuit of personal enrichment, but for a spiritual quest for inner perfection.
